Thomas Edward “Tom” Mahan, age 80, of Harrisburg, Illinois passed away on May 2, 2025 at Harrisburg Medical Center with family by his side.
Tom was born on September 18, 1944 to Thomas J. and Hazel (Bean) Mahan. He was raised in Equality where he graduated top of his class as Salutatorian. In his younger years he worked as a Face Boss at Peabody Coal Company, later working at Old Ben Coal Company. Tom spent many years as a truck driver for JeaDon Trucking with a special love for Momma Jean, as he called her, one of his favorite people. He shared many trips with his son Thomas E. Mahan II, always having a story to tell of their time on the road together. After retiring he took much pleasure in riding his motorcycle, boating, trotline fishing and camping with his daughter, Angie, his son Thomas and their families. Always making fun memories with his fishing buddies, brother-in-laws, Rick and Larry Bob Winters.
He cherished being a granpa/papa to his grandchildren Garett, Auston J., Clinton, Avery, Molly, Callan & Caedyn; they brought him pure joy. He also had a special place in his heart for his daughter, son and grandchildren in South Carolina. Tom had a generous heart, always willing to help those in need. He never met a stranger; he would strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere. Tom attended Little Chapel Church as his health permitted. He loved his Father God, Lord Jesus and Holy Spirit and sharing his faith in them. He was bold in his debate of the truth of the infallible word of God with others and enjoyed worshipping with the old Christian hymns. He was always saying “I don’t need to know the plan; I just need to know the Master of the plan”. In conversation, if he agreed with what was said, he will be remembered for his go-to comment “No doubt”.
Tom is survived by his daughter, Angie (Mahan) Salus of Harrisburg; son, Thomas and Paige (Willis) Mahan; grandchildren, Garett Mahan; Auston J. Mahan; Clinton Ferrell, Callan Mahan; Caedyn Mahan; Avery Willis; and Molly Mahan; and several close nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Roxie Slivinski; sister, Maretta Ragsdale; nephew, Alan Edwards; and nephew, Larry Mitchell.
