Rev. Barry Gordon Bascom

     Rev. Barry Gordon Basom, age 76, of Harrisburg, passed away at 12:52 PM, Thursday, December 23, 2021 at his home. 

     Barry was born on February 10, 1945 to the late Ulys Grover and Elizabeth Haseltine (Davis) Bascom. On December 1, 1966 he married Myra Penrod and they enjoyed 55 years of marriage.   Barry and Myra served many churches in southern Illinois and Barry was a long-time member of Harrisburg First Baptist Church. Barry served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.

     Barry worked as contractor, “Mr. B Can Do It”, and bi-vocational pastor. Barry served as the pastor for Rudement Social Brethren Church, Saline Ridge Baptist Church, Herod Springs Baptist Church and Union Chapel. He often filled in at churches all throughout the Saline Baptist Association. Barry loved working with his hands, but mostly loved his family, especially his grandkids.

     Barry is survived by his daughter, Shara Dawn Brown and James Clarida of Woodlawn; three grandchildren, Kelsey Nichole Brown of Benton; Kylee Renae Brown and fiancé, J.D. Fulk of Kansas City, Missouri; and Keaton Alan Brown of Woodlawn; sister-in-law, Betty Bascom of New Baden; sister-in-law, Cheryl Bascom of Springfield, Missiouri; niece, Michelle Scherrer and husband, Michael of Waterloo; niece, Nicki Donnelson and husband, Curtis of Springfield, Missouri, niece, Kristi Romine of Canby, Indiana; nephew, William Marnet and wife, Barb of Kansas City, Missouri; and special friends, Anita and Ed Whipple.

     Barry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bill Bascom; Weldon Bascom; and Noel Bascom; and sister, Mervin Joyce Bascom in infancy. A celebration of life will be held for Barry and Myra from 2 PM to 4 PM, Sunday, May 22, 2022 at the Saline Baptist Association Grounds. Come celebrate as we remember these amazingly, wonderful people, share stories of their life and our tears, but most of all share the stories of their love, laughter and friendship.
