Regnald Louis Riegel, age 101 of Harrisburg, Illinois, passed away at the Veterans Administration Community Living Center on February 1, 2024 at 2:16 PM.
Regnald was born on September 10, 1922 in Galatia, Illinois to the late Leonard Louis and Carrie (Moore) Riegel. On November 20,1941 he married the former Mildred Reynolds and she preceded him in death on August 2, 2014. Regnald was a WWII Veteran of the Army and served mostly in the Hawaiian Islands as a bugler. He played Reveille twice a day, once for the enlisted men and again for the officers. He also taught other soldiers how to play the bugle. Regnald had the honor of playing Taps for President Rosevelt’s memorial service which was held in the Hawaii Islands. Regnald loved farming and he was the owner/operator of Riegel Farm Equipment, Lawn and Garden from 1949 to 1984. He later owned DHR Trucking. Regnald was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Galatia 684, the Harrisburg American Legion George Hart Post #167 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Regnald was a founding board member of Saline Valley First Federal Savings and Loan and served from 1960 until its close, former elder at Union Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and a former Saline County Board member and Past President of the Saline County Board from 1978-1980. He loved people and never met a stranger. He also loved telling stories, fishing, boating on Kentucky and Barkley lakes, gardening, and his fruit trees.
Regnald is survived by his two daughters, Linda Winders of Harrisburg; and Regina Demeter and husband Bill of Crown Point, Indiana; three grandchildren, Nicole Elaine Winders Lyerla of Harrisburg; Mitchell Ross Demeter of Valparaiso, Indiana; and Carli Demeter Roozee and husband Josh of Rensselaer, Indiana; two great grandchildren, Paul Lyerla of Evansville, Indiana; and Kinzington Roozee of Rensselaer, Indiana; step granddaughter, Heather Demeter Carter of Valparaiso, Indiana; two step great grandchildren, Kurt Carter and Kyle Carter of Valparaiso, Indiana; nephews, Vernon Bond of Harrisburg and Jerry Edwards of Marion; and niece, Cheryl Haunschild of Phoenix, Arizona.
In addition to his parents, and wife Mildred, Regnald was preceded in death by a son, Larry Riegel, son-in-law, Fred Winders, sister, Marjorie Edwards, and two sisters in infancy.
Funeral services for Regnald Louis Riegel will be held at 1 PM, Wednesday, February 7, 2024 with Masonic rites at the Harrisburg First United Methodist Church. Rev. Lynette Barnett will officiate and burial will follow in Sunset Lawn Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Army, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Sons of the American Legion. Visitation will be held from 11 AM to 1 PM, Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at the Harrisburg First United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Harrisburg First United Methodist Church or the American Legion George Hart Post #167 and envelopes will be available at the church.
