Opal Velma Denton, age 90, formerly of Cave-in-Rock, passed away on February 19th, 2024.
Opal is survived by her loving daughters Cathy (John) Price of Cave-in-Rock, IL and Janet (John) Hart of Harrisburg, IL. Grandchildren John Bradly (Michele) Price of Elizabethtown, IL, Brian David (Trisha) Price of O'Fallon, IL, Julie Beth (Greg) Warren of Rosiclare, IL, Maggie Lee (José) Hart-Ray, of Savannah, GA and dear Great Grandchildren and Great Great Grandchildren, and two devoted nieces Donna (John) Mott-Cullum of Cave-In-Rock, IL and Sandi (Joe) Mott-Jerrels of Elizabethtown, IL.
Opal was born on January 4th, 1934 to Fannie Dutton-Smith and Linial (Dod) Smith and married Harry Lee Denton on November 4th, 1950.
Opal is preceded in death by her loving husband of 72 years Harry Lee Denton, parents Fannie and Dod Smith, sister Dorothy Marie (Deneen) Smith-Mott, and niece Karen Mott-Sisk.
Opal had a servant's heart and loved to help her family and care for them in times of need. She loved her church community, and enjoyed singing, playing the piano, and performing with various gospel groups. She cherished her time teaching Sunday School classes with the younger generation.
Opal took pride in being a homemaker and caretaker to those in need. She enjoyed gardening and planting flowers. Opal was the cornerstone of her family reaching out with her love and grace. When a loved one needed prayer, she was the first one called.
Opal will be dearly missed by her family, church community, and neighbors. Harry Lee and his beloved "Opie" are finally reunited in their heavenly home.
Graveside services for Opal Velma Denton will be held at 12 PM, Friday, February 23, 2024 at Cave Hill Cemetery in Cave-in-Rock. Memorials may be made to the Golden Circle and envelopes will be available at the cemetery.
