Norman Rayfield Edgar, 72, passed from this life surrounded by the love he so faithfully gave to others. Born in Rock Island, Illinois, he was the son of Norman Robert Edgar and Beverly Jeanne (Morrissey) Gaylor. He grew up with a strong sense of family and responsibility—values that shaped the man he would become. He graduated from Moline High School and furthered his education by taking a forestry class at Southeastern Illinois College, reflecting his lifelong appreciation for the outdoors.
Norman was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He shared 49 beautiful years of marriage with his loving wife, Clara Renae (Potter) Edgar, of Muddy Illinois. Together they built a life grounded in love and commitment. He was a proud and affectionate father to his daughters, Mollie Jeanne (Edgar) Wise of Pineville, Louisiana, and Samantha Ruth-Ann Edgar of Eldorado, Illinois, both of whom adored him deeply. He cherished his son-in-law, Matthew Wise, and found immense joy in his granddaughters, Ammie Beth Wise and Kallie Jo Wise, who brought him great pride and happiness.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Mitchell Eugene Edgar; his sister, Cynthia Louise Thompson; and his in-laws, Clarence Lloyd Potter and Ruth Elvada (DeVar) Potter. Though he experienced loss in his lifetime, he remained steady in faith and character.
Norman’s career began with Jake’s Tires, The Fountain restaurant and The Village Pump, where he worked as a cook. He then started at the United City Gas Company (Atmos), where he served on the construction crew for many years. His dedication, reliability, and strong work ethic were evident throughout his time there. He worked in the produce department at Kroger following his retirement, continuing to contribute to his community through honest labor. Throughout his life, he also faithfully served the Village of Muddy—working in the water department for many years and later serving as Mayor of the village. His commitment to his community reflected his deep sense of responsibility and care for others. Norman approached his work with dedication, humility, and a willingness to help wherever he was needed.
Norman loved the outdoors—fishing, hunting, and gardening were among his greatest joys. Time spent in nature brought him peace and contentment. He loved his wife and daughters faithfully throughout his life and demonstrated his love through steady presence, support, and care. His heart was compassionate and servant-minded; he was always ready to help others, reflecting his genuine desire to serve.
Norman achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in Scouting and a distinction earned by only a small percentage of youth—approximately 4%. This accomplishment required dedication, perseverance, and leadership, including earning 21 merit badges, serving in leadership roles within his troop, and planning and completing a meaningful community service
project. His achievement reflected not only personal discipline and commitment, but also his willingness to serve others and lead by example.
He enjoyed speaking with others about the Bible and shared his faith in practical, thoughtful ways. Norman was also known for his sense of humor and practical jokes, which brought laughter and warmth to family and friends.
Norman Rayfield Edgar will be remembered for his devotion to family, his faithful service to his community, his strong work ethic, and his compassionate heart. His legacy of love, integrity, and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
