Mildred Adcock was born to Willy “Pa” and Lula “Ma” Jones March 15, 1929 in Sparta Tennessee. She was a country girl through and through. Some of her favorite sayings were,” do you want to go possum hunting? You can be my possum dog.” Or “you’re as handy as a pocket on a shirt”. She tagged along behind her 3 older brothers J.R., Floyd and Homer, most of her childhood. She went to school till 8th grade, then helped on the family farm. She met Earl at a young age in Tennessee. They were married on July 25, 1950 and had 3 wonderful children Randy, Kathleen and Barbara. They moved around a lot for his job and finally settled here in their forever home in Dorris Heights of Harrisburg when the kids were in high school. She remained at that house until the last few months of her life. Her husband Earl took his last breath in that home on June 4, 2006. All three children were married soon after and they started getting grandchildren while Earl worked in the coal mines. First came the twins, Jared and Jade, who were born to their daughter Kathleen and her husband Glenn Sperling. A year later came Amanda born to their youngest daughter Barbara and Stanley Miller. She was a homemaker and caregiver most of her adult life. She was a grandmother that anyone would want to have. She played Old Bear with her grandchildren for years. She was the bear, growling and snarling to come get them. She took them fishing with grandpa and mushroom hunting. She fried up the best quail and fried chicken. She made the best fried apple pies. She would always have popcorn and lemonade on a sheet on the floor to watch a movie when they were over. They raised bird dogs for years. She always had puppies at their house. She had us scrape our leftovers from the amazing dinners she always cooked, into the infamous “dog bucket” that she kept in the inside door of the fridge, so she could give a treat to the dogs. When tragedy struck their daughter Barbara, whom was seriously impaired by a sudden aneurysm, she and grandpa Earl took care of her every day for 10 years. After that she took care of her dying father, Pa then her mother Ma and lastly her husband. She was blessed to know her great grandchildren too. First came Jacob, born to her granddaughter Amanda (Mathew) Duffy and then came Lucas and Jacey. Stella was born to her granddaughter Jade (Chad) Hendriks. Lastly Kenzi, Jax and Jase were born to her grandson Jared (Kari) Sperling. She was very independent. She mowed her own lawn into her 80’s. She had a full life and was loved by many. She will be terribly missed by us all, but she’s waited a long time to join her loved ones in heaven. She passed away peacefully at Harrisburg Medical Center with her daughter Kathleen by her side. She was told to go join Dad and Barbara in heaven. Five minutes later, she passed. She is survived by her son Randy Adcock of Evansville, Indiana, daughter Kathleen (Glenn) Sperling, grandchildren Jade (Chad) Hendriks of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Jared (Kari) Sperling of Harrisburg Illinois and Amanda (Mathew) Duffy of Murphysboro, and great grandchildren Jacob, Lucas, Jacey Duffy, Stella Hendriks and Kenzi, Jax and Jase Sperling. As she used to say many times, “Home again home again jiggidy jig!” “After a while, crocodile “and “See you next week with a brand new show!”
In addition to her parents and husband Earl, Mildred was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Miller and three brothers, Floyd, J.L. and Homer Jones.
