Mary (Durant) Gholson

     Mary Gholson, age 88 of Harrisburg, Illinois passed away peacefully at 5:33 AM, December 16, 2024 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale surrounded by her family.

      Mary was born on February 29, 1936 in Harrisburg to the late Joseph and Mary (Hazley) Durant. She married Bill Gholson on March 5, 1956 and he survives in Harrisburg. Mary was a member of North Williford Baptist Church. She worked as a sales clerk for Woolsworth, Davenports, and the Youth Shop. Mary enjoyed quilting and cooking. Mary would bend over backwards for her family. Mary often babysat for her grandchildren. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister.

     In addition to her husband, Bill, Mary is survived by her son, Bill Gholson Jr. and wife Susie of Harrisburg, Illinois; son, Joe Gholson and wife, Cindy of Harrisburg, Illinois; four grandchildren, Matt Gholson and wife, Shauna of Benton, Illinois; Mike Gholson and wife, Teresa of Harrisburg, Illinois; Joe Gholson and wife, Le of San Jose, California; and Brittany Yaworski and husband, Andrew of Tacoma, Washington; six great grandchildren, Miley, Charlotte, Lily, Lucas, Mariemma, and Abby; and several special nieces and nephews.

    In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by sister, Flora Kumer; brother, Bob Durant; brother, Joseph Durant; and sister, Velma “Toots” Harbison.

    Funeral services for Mary Gholson will be held at 2 PM, Friday, December 20, 2024 at Stricklin Funeral Home in Harrisburg. Eric Gregg will officiate and burial will follow in Sunset Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12 Noon to 2 PM at Stricklin Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and will be received at the funeral home.
