1944 - 2023

     Mary Sue Ewing, 79 of Harrisburg, passed away at 1:28 PM, Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at Saline Care Center in Harrisburg.

     Mary Sue was born in Chicago on April 25, 1944 to the late Arthur Glen and Mary Elizabeth (Edwards) Zumwalt. On August 21, 1965 she married Joseph Frederic Ewing and he survives. Mary Sue was the school nurse for Harrisburg Unit #3 School District for 29 years. Prior to that she worked as an RN at St Joseph’s Hospital in Murphysboro and at Harrisburg Medical Center. Mary Sue served on the board of Harrisburg Medical Center for ten years. She also volunteered at the Bridge Clinic. Mary Sue was a member of the Harrisburg First United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir. She was a member of the Harrisburg P.E.O, and Garden Club. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed painting but her greatest joy was her grandchildren.

     In addition to her husband, Joe, Mary Sue is survived by a daughter, Laura Baur and husband, Rick of St. Louis, Missouri; daughter, Megin Rice and husband, Jonah of Stonefort; five grandchildren, Matt and Ally Baur, and Jacob, Haley, and Connor Rice; brother, Donald Zumwalt and wife Beth; sister-in-law, Mary Anne Betteridge and husband, Dave; brother-in-law, Jim Ewing and wife Lou Ann; sister-in-law, Margo Zumwalt; and sister-in-law, Jane Zumwalt.

     Mary Sue was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Zachary Baur, and brothers, Arthur Zumwalt, and David Zumwalt.

     Memorial services will be held at 3 PM, Saturday, August 12, 2023 at Stricklin Funeral Home in Harrisburg. Rev. Lynett Barnett will officiate. Visitation will be held from 1:30 PM until the service hour. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Harrisburg First United Methodist Church, SIC Foundation for the Nursing Program or Hospice of Southern Illinois.
