Mark D. Smith, 66, of Hillsboro, Illinois, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on December 4, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on June 6, 1959, Mark lived a life defined by deep faith, unwavering devotion to those he loved, and a servant's heart. The absolute joy of his life was his cherished wife, Mary J. Smith, with whom he shared a beautiful and steadfast love. Together they built a family rooted in kindness, strength, and a love for the Lord.
Mark was the proud father of Aprill (Timothy) Downen, 45, and Mark Jacob Smith, 41, all of Hillsboro. Nothing brought him more happiness than being "Papa" to his grandchildren—Timothy Hunter, Hudson Lee, Kenadee Nichole, and Mark Ryker—each one the light of his life and a source of immeasurable pride. His face lit up with joy every time he spoke of them. Mark also leaves behind beloved sister, Diana (Brad) Crick and brother, Donald (Ronica) Smith.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Donald Lee Smith and Norma Ruth Smith, and his cherished siblings Terry Ruth Casteel and Michael Lee Smith. Their reunion in Heaven is surely filled with laughter, love, and celebration.
Mark dedicated his life to serving others. As both a pastor and a truck driver, he carried the love of Christ wherever he went. Whether behind a pulpit, behind the wheel, or simply in everyday conversation, Mark shared the Gospel with passion, humility, and sincerity. His faith was the foundation of his life, and he lived it openly and joyfully, touching countless hearts with his kindness, encouragement, and quiet strength.
A lifelong sports lover, Mark played football and wrestled for the Harrisburg Bulldogs in his younger years and continued cheering for the Green Bay Packers throughout his life. He loved his pet labradors, Taz, Daisy, and Egon. Lambeau, was his faithful companion—always by his side and always ready for one more belly rub or just a peaceful moment together.
Mark's legacy is one of love, faith, and family. He leaves behind a host of loved relatives and friends who will forever treasure his gentle smile, silly jokes, warm hugs, steadfast prayers, and the example he set of what it means to walk with the Lord.
Though he will be deeply missed, we take comfort knowing he is now in the presence of Jesus, whole, joyful, and waiting for the day we meet again. What a wonderful day that will be.
