Mrs. Lodema Ferrell Sisk passed peacefully to her eternal home in heaven on December 24, 2023, where she was met by her dear husband, Ben, and many other family members and dear friends.
She was born in Harrisburg on April 21, 1928, to parents Roby and Elsie Ferrell, and was the oldest of their five children. She was happily married to Ben Sisk, Jr., on July 22, 1950, celebrating 64 anniversaries. To their happy union were born two daughters; Dr. Dana Keating (Bill) and Dr. Benna Daugherty (Dr. Tim). In time four precious grandchildren were added to the family; Kristopher Keating (Kim), Patrick Keating (Megan), Lauren Walker (Jason) and Lindsey Cox (D.J). Eventually five great-grandchildren came along: Sonni Keating, Bentley and Raylee Cox, and Max and Era Walker. They were a great joy and greatly loved by “Granny Lo,” as she was affectionately called by her family.
Lodema was a devoted wife and mother whose life centered around her family, her church, and her teaching career. She became a Christian when she was 12 years old. She loved Dorrisville Baptist Church where she served faithfully all her life as a devoted member involved in many activities, especially in music. She began playing the piano at church when she was 14 and continued playing until age 90.
After graduating from Harrisburg High School in 1946, Lodema received a scholarship to attend SIU, where she received a B.S. in Elementary Education in 1950. She also earned an M.S. in Guidance and Counseling from SIU in 1954. She spent 25 happy years teaching school, with most of that time at Dorrisville School, later named Phillips School. She had many great memories of the days she spent in her classroom and the hundreds of students whom she both taught and loved well. The last three years of her teaching career were spent at West Side School in a sixth-grade classroom. After retiring, she spent her time traveling with friends and family, enjoying time involved in church activities, and even more time with family, especially with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they came along.
Lodema has one surviving sister, Linda Carnett (Don) and a sister-in-law, Donna Ferrell. Two brothers, Dale and Dennis, and a sister, Velda Ruth Ferrell, preceded her in death. She had many nephews and nieces, as well as many loving and caring friends. Special friends and beloved caretakers include Pat Wright and Patty Hedger. She also loved and appreciated those who cared for her at Carrier Mills Nursing Home, where she spent fourteen months.
A celebration of Lodema’s life will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, December 28th at Dorrisville Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Dewayne Taylor. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Liberty Cemetery. The family requests donations in Lodema’s honor be made to the Dorrisville Baptist Church Mission Trips Fund. Envelopes will be available at the church.
