Kenneth "Pete" Childers

     Kenneth “Pete” Childers, Jr., age 76 of Harrisburg, passed away at 5:55 PM, Thursday, September 22, 2022 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana.

     “Pete” was born on March 23, 1946 in Eldorado to the late Kenneth and Delma (Brown) Childers, Sr.  He married Franziska Zirkel on October 5, 1967 and she survives.  “Pete” was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Harrisburg, the Illinois Police Association and the Illinois Chief of Police Association. He served his country in the United States Airforce and his community as a police officer and later as police chief, as well the director of public safety for Harrisburg. “Pete” also taught the DARE programs in many local area schools.

     “Pete” is survived by his wife, Franziska, son; John Childers of Harrisburg; daughter, Stephanie Betts and husband Norman of Harrisburg; grandchildren Brianna Childers, Bailey Childers, Nickolaus Childers, Derrick Hawkins, Josh Betts, and Joseph Betts; two great grandchildren, Maxton, and Colter Hawkins; brother, Paul Childers and wife Brenda of Arlington, Texas; sister, Sandy Coffee, and husband Curt of Arcadia, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

     There will be no services for Kenneth “Pete” Childers, Jr.
