John Phillip Mitchell

     John Phillip “Philby” Mitchell, age 67 of Raleigh, Illinois, passed away on August 3, 2024 at St. Louis University Hospital surrounded by his family.     

     Phillip was born on December 22, 1956 in Harrisburg, Illinois to the late John “Jack” and Laverne (Stilley) Mitchell Jr.  On June 24, 1977 he married Donieta Walker and she survives in Raleigh.  Phillip was a retired coal miner and farmer.  He loved his family, especially his grand babies.  Phillip liked John Deere tractors and enjoyed raising cattle.  He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, trapping, hiking and hunting mushrooms.  Phillip loved watching westerns and NASCAR.  He enjoyed just going for a drive.  Phillip was everyone’s best friend.  He enjoyed playing practical jokes on his co-workers; he really loved to laugh.       

     John is survived by his wife, Donieta; son, John Mitchell and wife Wendy of Raleigh; son, Austin Mitchell and wife Meghan of Raleigh; daughter, Ashley Plumlee and husband Matthew of Harrisburg; eight grandchildren, Jay Mitchell and wife Kayla of Galatia; Tristan Mitchell of Galatia; Hadleigh Plumlee of Harrisburg; Ansley Plumlee of Harrisburg; Rowan Plumlee of Harrisburg; Walker Mitchell of Raleigh; Sawyer Mitchell of Raleigh; Memphis Mitchell of Raleigh; great grand-daughter, Elizabeth Mitchell of Galatia; sister, Diane Ross of Galatia; father-in-law, Charles Walker and several nieces and nephews       

     In addition to his parents, Phillip was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Young; brother, James Mitchell; and mother-in-law, Sylvia Walker.

     Funeral services for John Phillip Mitchell will be held at 1 PM, Thursday, August 8, 2024 at Stricklin Funeral Home in Harrisburg, IL.  Rev. Kevin Peyton will officiate and burial will follow at Raleigh Masonic Cemetery in Raleigh.  Visitation will be held from 11 AM - 1 PM, Thursday, August 8, 2024 at Stricklin Funeral Home in Harrisburg.  Memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society, Raleigh Masonic Cemetery and The American Red Cross and envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
