John was born on October 4th, 1948, he was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and he graduated from Cave-in-Rock High School in 1966. John served in the United States Air Force and on October 15th, 1969 John and Cathy were married. He grew up with a love for the outdoors camping and hunting every opportunity he had. John carried these hobbies over into his family teaching his way of horseback riding and camping to his kids. Vegetable gardening and woodworking brought him peace, as he tended to his seeds and plants. He would preserve his garden's bounty through canning which he gifted to family and friends. John spent many years giving back to his community by volunteering his time and skills to the Heritage Festival and several different riding clubs.
John devoted years to truck driving with RG Berry Trucking, earning him the handle "Grandpa" due to his close relationships, particularly with his dear friend Ronnie Row “DoubleR”.
After retirement from truck driving, John was employed by the Hardin County School District as a custodian and school bus driver. He was dedicated to the wellbeing of the youth in the community where his CB handle of "Grandpa" followed his legacy with the children. He was a mentor for the students as he cared for them as one of his own.
John will be missed by his family, friends, and his beloved cat, Kitty.
