James Mitchell Obituary

James H. Mitchell, 70 of Raleigh, IL passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family and friends on Saturday December 30th, 2023. Born on April 23, 1953 in Harrisburg, Illinois to John (Jack) and Laverne (Stilley) Mitchell, he grew up the third of four children.

His parents moved to Raleigh, IL when James was a young child and he called this small town home for the remainder of his days.  Many would often hear James say, "Why would I ever need to leave Saline County?"  He married Carmen Cindy Irvin on May 15, 1976 and they raised a son Chad J. Irvin and a daughter Amy R. (Mitchell) Vickery together, making sure to instill values of hard work and resilience in each.

James often referred to himself as a "Jack of all Trades, Master of None"; however this was never the case.  James had skills in multiple areas that he most certainly mastered.  Farming was his passion and he worked thousands of tireless days in his Case IH and John Deere machinery to produce a plentiful crop.  James has been described as being one of the hardest workers many knew.  A man who got up every morning at 4 am and put in a long, hard day's work.  His early years included raising cattle and in addition to his corn, soybean, hay, and wheat crops, James also established a successful U-pick strawberry farm with his wife and a chrysanthemum business with his daughter.  These entrepreneurial sides flourished for many years surviving on his farming expertise.

James enjoyed several hobbies including deer hunting, bee keeping, gun collecting, carpentry, and simply being outside in nature.  The joy of these activities could not compare though to the light gained in his life when he welcomed a grandson, Eli James Vickery.  Their relationship grew from early years as he would let Eli ride in the tractor with him, hide money in the mums for Eli to find, and share many seasons of deer hunting together.

James was known as a man who would always help a neighbor in need.  This gift was reciprocated back to him in the last few years when he met Jon Herron, who became the greatest friend that James would ever know.  Though they had lived less than a mile apart for 15 years, until recently they never fully met.  This friendship allowed James to continue what he had loved doing for years by climbing into a tractor again, fixing machinery, and seeing a full harvest one more time before he would pass.

James was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Linda J. Young.  He is survived by his wife, Carmen Cindy Mitchell; a son Chad Justin Irvin; a daughter Amy Ruth Vickery; her fiance Walter Skeate; three grandchildren, Alyssa Irvin, Eli Vickery, Emma Skeate; a sister Diane Ross; a brother Philip (Doneita) Mitchell; several nieces and nephews and his two furry friends Louie and Leo.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at Stricklin Funeral Home in Harrisburg, IL from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM.  Funeral service to immediately follow starting at noon.  Eulogy to be given by his daughter Amy Vickery and best friend Jon Herron.  Family requests that if you have Carhartt to please wear it in honor of James.
