David Joseph Landis Sr., age 80 of Harrisburg, passed away at 3:09 AM, Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
David was born on February 16, 1943 in Harrisburg to the late James Wilson Landis Sr. and Stell Iona (Kent) Landis. On March 16, 1965, he married Marily Joyce Sandland and she preceded him in death on January 12, 2022. David graduated in 1961 from Harrisburg Township High School, “HTHS” and enlisted in the Army. He served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963. Upon returning to the states, he went to work for Sahara Coal Company working at both #6 and #21, and later as a heavy equipment operator for the Operating Engineers Local 318. In his retirement he worked for the US Postal Service out of McLeansboro. David was a member of Grace Baptist Church. He loved International second-generation tractors like the H and the M and his cattle. Earlier in his life he enjoyed farming, hunting and fishing.
David is survived by a son, David J. Landis, Jr. of Harrisburg and Vickie Hall of Eldorado, seven grandchildren, Mariah Landis and Marcus Smith of Carbondale; Caitlyn Landis of Gainesville, Florida; Logan Landis of Princeton, Indiana; Erin Landis and wife Molly of Petersburg, Indiana; Breonna Irvin and fiancée Dylan Wolf of Raleigh; Brittani Hatton and husband Rian; and Sara Irvin and fiancée Jordan Aud; nine great grandchildren, Tatiana, Jessa, Vallery, Josh, Elijah, Wesley, Hayden, Brennan Lincoln; Jermaih Smith and Leon Smith; sisters, Sharon Sanders and husband Jerry of Harrisburg; Darlene Oliver of Roper, North Carolina; and Janet Peavey of Garland, Texas; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his wife, Marilyn, and parents, David was preceded in death by a son, Robert E. Landis; grandson, Colin G. Landis; sister, Mary Kathleen Hurd; sister, Wanda Lutterman; sister, Carol Cletcher; sister, Ramona Gentry, brother, Jim Landis Jr.; brother, Bobby Landis; brother, Marshall Landis; and sister Leeann Landis.
Funeral services for David J. Landis Sr. will be held at 3 PM, Sunday, October 15, 2023 at Stricklin Funeral Home in Harrisburg. Rev. Don Nelson will officiate and burial will follow in Sunset Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 PM to 3 PM. Sunday, October 15, 2023 at Stricklin Funeral Home.
