Carl Sullivan Obituary

Carl Lee Sullivan, age 71, of Thompsonville, passed away at 12:13 PM, Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, surrounded by his family.

Carl was born on May 18, 1952 in Christopher, Illinois to Vernon Lee and June (Serles) Sullivan.  On April 10, 1976 he married Sandy Stevens and she survives.  Carl graduated from Thompsonville High School in 1970 and Southeastern Illinois College Forestry Program in 1972. Carl served his country in the United States Army serving in Germany during Vietnam.  He was the last one drafted out of Hamilton County before the draft was closed.  Carl served from October 16, 1972 to October 17, 1974.  During his time in the Army, Carl was a Hawk Missile Fire Crewman and M 16 Marksman. He was a life-long farmer and has pumped oil wells for multiple companies for the past 40 years.  Carl also helped build many barns and houses, including his own using his carpentry skills; he had the ability to fix anything.  He was a deacon and member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.  Carl was also a member of the American Legion Post 1194 in Thompsonville. He served as a trustee at Pleasant Valley Cemetery and was an active member of the Illinois Beef Association. Carl loved working in the oil field and on the family farm.  He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan who loved listening to the games. Papa also loved helping and watching his grandkids with their 4-H calves. But all this pales in comparison to the love he had for his God and his family. Carl was a loving husband, father and papa. He was also devoted to his church and his church family. He was loved by everyone that knew him.

Carl is survived by his wife, Sandy of forty-seven years of Thompsonville; son, Adam of Thompsonville and special friend, Ginger Launius; daughter, Angie Oglesby and husband Josh of Galatia; two grandchildren, Addyson and Easton Oglesby; mother, June Sullivan of Thompsonville; sister, Peggy Boone of Harrisburg; brother, Michael Sullivan of Thompsonville; brother, Mark Sullivan of St. Louis; several aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many close friends.
