Betty Pringle-Mason Obituary

Beginning of Autumn season of 1932, the beautiful daughter Betty Lewis Pringle entered this world on September 27th to the proud parents of Elza Pringle and Mattie Goins-Rhine. They proudly gave her the Lewis name after Dr. James Lewis who was the first African American doctor in Saline County.

Betty enjoyed her childhood along with her siblings in Harrisburg Illinois, where you could find her horseback riding or spending time with her father in their family-owned cleaners that was a staple in the bustling African American neighborhood on Walnut Street which she lived majority of her adult life and would often find her sitting on the porch with her beloved friends.

As a youth she attended Lincoln School and Harrisburg High School. At the young age of fourteen, she married her childhood sweetheart Charles Leland Mason Sr. Together, for over seventy-four years, they gave a beautiful life and caring home to their six children.

“Momma,” as she was called by her children and grandchildren, was our protector and personal nurse, voice of reason, and could give Mike Tyson a run for his money. One thing for sure, we knew “Momma” would show up or show out if needed! Most importantly, she taught us the value of family where we would gather ever Sunday for dinner or as our grandfather, “Papa” would tease us and say, “Betty is in the back opening cans.”

Later in life, Betty was inspired by her friend Shirley Oshel to pursue a career in nursing.  She became a Licensed Practitioner Nurse in 1969 after many hours of study.

She was employed several years at the Al Bowen Center, Harrisburg Medical Center where she enjoyed the Obstetrics Department witnessing the birth of many Harrisburg adults today.

She became “Nurse of the Year” in 1989, at Shawnee Correctional Center in Vienna and was employed at several surrounding nursing homes until her retirement. Fondly, known to many as “Nurse Betty.”

As Timothy 4:7 states, she has fought the good fight, she has finished her race and kept the faith. After her bravest fight, the Lord held her hand on December 3rd to reunite her with her loved ones in heaven.

We find solace that she is reunited in heaven with her parents, loving husband Charles, daughter Lynda Jean Askew, brother Elza Blaine Pringle, sisters Lotella Thomas, Evelyn Messer, Lee Ann Taborn and Bessie Sue Anderson.

Her biggest joy in life were her children, Vickie Darlene Mason, Charles Leland Mason Jr, (Mary), Gregory Lee Mason, Tony Leon Mason (Dee), and Shirley Mason Walda (Gary). However, her finest treasures were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her beloved sisters-in-law Mary Pringle and Thaddeus Mason, nieces, nephews, and a multitude of friends who will feel the dimmer days without her in them.
